Starter-relay goes *Click* when i press 'Start'

Hi

I just got myself a used Leo 250 '01 with 50.000 on the clock.

It was located in the other end of the contry, so I boght it without seeing it, it must have been a week moment for me haha ..

But to the problem:

I got it home today, and charged the battery up ( it hasent been started for 2 years)
And when i press the start-button, it just says "click"

Nothing else.

The click-sound, comes from the starter-relay in the right side of the back-panel, but i havent got all the plastic off, so i can get to it.

Do any of you eksperts know what that can be?

the problem maybe could be a defective battery. It has a off-load voltage near 12 V, but if you press the start button, the relay closes the circuit of the starter engine an the voltage breaks down.
You should meassure the voltage of the battery during you are pressing the start switch. If it ist below 8 V an you have already charged the battery, it has to be replaced.

Another "quick test" could be: What happens if you are turning on the light? Does the check lamp for the oil pressure go out or is it getting much darker? Then the problem ist the battery, too.

But if the voltage is OK and the relais still only clicks, the relay itself may be defective. To check this, you supply voltage directly to the starter engine. With a scredriver or an other metal tool, you can bridgeover the power contacts of the relay. You need not to remove the tail wing; on the right side in the bottom, there is a little hole where you can see the contacts.

Hi Christian

I think you hit the head on the nail.

It was the relay that was defective.
When i made a short-cirket on it, it starteded at once.
afterwards i tryed to use the start-button, but it was the same click.
I have found a starter relay from a 50cc scooter that only have a 12v 4A battery, but do you think i can use that?


- A little bonus question.

The rear-disc is going to be replaced.
Is the 125/150 rear-disc the same as the 250?

I have no experiences with the 250 model, but I think it has a brake disc which is different of those used in 125/150 models.

The problem of the relay ist the high current of the starter engine. In former days, I fixed the problem of the defective relay with a ordinary car relay which was build for 40 A.
That worked perfect for many weeks. The problem ist that the car relay has oder connections - so you have to change the terminals of the cables. Later, I replaced it again by a original relay for safety reasons.
I think the relay is not so expensive. I think you should insert an original relay (maybe a used one - asked Mikel).

Hi Christian..

I changed the starter-relay with the scooter relay.
the two relays was 100% identical, so that is cool and it only cost me 26€ for a new one :]

The scooter starts fine now.

And by the way.
Te battery WAS dead. When i charge it full, it can't keep the current for longer than an houer or so.
So new battery on the way.

The disc's is going to be a Braking in front and a Lucas in the back, from SIP.
